june budget

june budget

june budget: $203.91
second quarter budget: $600 - $180.24 in April - $231.38 in May
- $203.91 in June = $587.53
$15.53 over for the second quarter

I feel like this was the month for random purchases. A kimono or two here, striped skirt or two there, add a few cognac accessories ... my choices may not have been the most thought out, but I'm still happy with my closet additions (even if I did go a wee bit over budget).

My favorite purchases are the two J. Crew Factory striped midi skirts. After seeing the navy and white stripe make its way through the blogger rounds (see it on Kate, Sarah and Fran), I knew I wanted to make it mine as well. Since it's more knee-length than midi, I'm not sure it will work maternity-wise, so I may have to wait awhile to wear it. The seersucker skirt, (see how I wore it here) worn over the bump, it hits right at the knee. I love how fresh and summery it looks - plus pockets! I sized up to an 18 in both skirts - mainly for the added length - and figure I can have them taken in if they're too big post-baby.

This maternity gray stripe tee (see how I wore it here) is perfect for those days where you just want something oversized and comfy that looks more dressed up than a plain t-shirt. It's an in XL with plenty of room for the expanding belly. I also snagged this cognac bag from GAP (see how I wore it here) as a replacement for my beloved aqua Kate Spade bag until I can have its handle repaired.

I've been on the lookout for cute sandals that don't have an ankle strap (thanks swollen ankles), and these cute two-tone gold and cognac sandals (see how I wore them here) fit the bill. I like that they have a thicker sole, though I they run a little small/narrow. I ordered my usual size 9 and they fit more like an 8.5. Unfortunately, they only go up to a 9, so I couldn't size up.

I've been wearing maternity dresses like crazy lately - truly a Florida summer salvation - so when this navy tank dress went on sale, I decided to add it to my ever growing collection. I really love that it goes just past the knee. I've worn it a ton, but haven't managed to get any outfit photos yet. #bloggerfail For reference, it's an XL.

And last, but not least, are the two kimonos. Did I need more kimonos, hmmm, perhaps not, but they are seriously the easiest thing to throw over a dress, jeans or shorts and instantly look more dressed up without adding a bulky layer. The cream floral tassel kimono (see how I wore it here) is a size XL and the black embroidered kimono (see how I wore it here) is a 1X. Sadly, both are sold out, but the non-plus version of the black kimono is still available.

And that's a wrap on the second quarter budget. Looking forward -  I just ordered the J. Crew linen campbell blazer in pink to try - already imaging all the cute bump outfits with it - so if it works out that'll be in next month's budget. :)

disappearing act

seersucker midi skirt and navy tee 5

Hi friends, I apologize for being a bit absent this week. I often blog on the fly, taking photos the day before (or day of) posting. I don't really plan my content ahead of time and this week it came back to bite me.

Backing up to last Friday, my poor kiddo took a tumble off our bed Friday evening and ended up breaking her collarbone. I spent Monday and Tuesday home with her, plus I left the external hard drive I keep all my blog content on at work, so it was all kind of a wash for posting. Then yesterday was a whirlwind a work - we had a professional photographer on campus to take photos for our fall magazine (my biggest project of the year) so I spent the day shadowing him and making sure all our subjects showed up, etc. Most of the day was spent in the Florida heat (oh, so fun while pregnant), so by the end of the day, all I wanted to do was shower and crash.

So here it is, Thursday, and I'm just getting around to posting for the week. Ugh. Lesson learned, I need to get back to having a backlog of photos - especially since I highly doubt I'll be taking a bunch of outfit photos right after the baby is born - hello sweatpants and greasy hair - and for situations like this week when I have more important things going on than to take outfit photos. It's always good to have a backup plan. And remember to take your hard drive home. :) Oh, well, live and learn.

Today makes 25 weeks pregnant, and time for this week's bump update. Baby boy is approximately 13 1/2 inches and the size of a rutabaga. He's positioned himself right on my bladder, which isn't the most fun - think multiple trips to the bathroom - but other than that, I'm still feeling well, if slightly more awkward. I've been thinking about his nursery, and have an inspiration post in the works. I've also started knitting his baby blanket. (I knit his big sister one, so I wanted to keep of the tradition.)

  • what's on my needles: I'm (slowly) working on baby boy's baby blanket. It's modified from The Little Songbird's pram blanket - basically I doubled the pattern, and though I'm not very far along, I love how it's turning out.
  • what I'm crushing on: Kendra Scott's seaside inspired line of jewelry. I'd love to have this asymmetrical long pearl statement necklace, these coral drop earrings or this tactile orb stackable ring duo

they can't all be winners

black and white stripe dress, long blush cardigan 7

Some outfits I post on here feel like a real home run - the lighting is great, the outfit photographs well and I feel pretty confident in what I'm posting - and then there's outfits like these. Those days when it's kinda gross outside, the hair is lackluster at best and the outfit is blah. But you know what? All the outfits can't be winners. Some days you just have to rock the slouchy dress, messy hair and a big 'ol dose of blah.

Today makes 24 weeks pregnant, so here's a quick bump update: Baby boy is approximately a foot long (so big!) and the size of an ear of corn. He's been super active lately and I'm starting to see his movements, which is fun. He's been a bit shy whenever husband tries to feel his kicks, but I'm sure he'll be feeling them soon enough!

midi skirted belly bump

chambray shirt, cream dot midi and wedge sandals 4

For those of you who have followed this space for awhile, you know adore midi skirts. My obsession began last summer and since then have added quite a few to my closet - red, polka dotted, pink pleated, teal - I went a bit wild. But with sadness, I packed them away for the move and didn't anticipate being able wear them again until after the baby was born.

That is, until I started seeing all these adorable midi skirt maternity outfits on Pinterest and became obsessed with trying it for myself. The question was, which skirt? Enter this cream, dotted midi skirt back bought back in March, but unworn before it was packed away with the rest of my midis. Which really bugged - beyond annoying to have wait at least nine months, if not longer, before finally getting to wear it. So when I decided to try out a maternity midi skirt outfit for myself, I knew I had to rip off the tags and wear this one.

Sadly, my skirt is no longer available, but I did find some fun alternatives for you:

While I'm not 100% convinced I'm pulling it off, it was nice to wear something different than my ever present jersey dresses and kimonos. So that has to count for something, right? :) That and the fact that I fixed my hair for the first time in weeks. I don't mind the wavy, but this definitely feels more like me and sometimes you just need to fix your hair and pull out an old favorite look to feel more like yourself (and less like the beached whale I keep telling my husband I feel like).

monday musings: week 24

monday musings_header

Welcome to Monday Musings! Each Monday I share a different "get to know you" style Q&A. I invite you to join in the comments below so I can get to know you as well.

Q: What do you like about where you live?

monday musings week 24

A: This question is timely since summer in Florida is especially hard for me - even more so while pregnant. It's so dang HOT, tourist season is in full blast and I start to fantasize about places like the Arctic. My husband and I joke that we reverse hibernate - all the outside things in the fall/winter and glorious air conditioned indoors during the worst of summer.

So it's good to reflect on the things I do like about living here: the unbelievable ocean views, a job that I actually like, my beautiful new home, Disney World within driving distance (hello Florida resident rates!), not to mention St. Augustine - one of my absolute favorite Florida spots - and we have moderate winters. All good things. So right now might not be my favorite Florida season, but there's still plenty to look forward to - beach days, 4th of July fireworks, cookouts (I got my husband a grill for Father's Day) and rainy summer days that make it cool enough to go adventuring. :)

What do you like about where you live? Let me know in the comments below.

back to black

maternity black dress, black kimono and embellished sandals 4

In the summer time (okay I know it's not officially summer, but it sure feels like it), I tend to gravitate toward lighter, brighter colors, floral patterns and seersucker stripes. But for this outfit, I decided to go back to the basics with an outfit of all neutrals with a strong emphasis on black. Because sometimes a girl just doesn't feel like all the colors - and you can't go wrong with basic black, right?

Random side note, when my husband was taking these photos he wanted to know why on earth I had bunnies on my kimono - which I can kind of see it - but I assure you they're flowers, not wildlife. :) I managed to score this kimono for a mere $13 dollars from Forever21. Mine's from the plus section and is unfortunately now sold out, but the non-plus version is still available and only $17 if you're interested.

Today makes 23 weeks, so it's time for another bump update. Baby boy's checkup went well yesterday, his heartbeat was 155 and he was determined to kick while the nurse was trying to capture his heart rate. :) He's approximately the size of a large mango (yum!) about 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound - though my bladder is convinced he's 10 times that size! I've been feeling him kick and move a lot lately, which makes the whole thing seem so much more real. October is going to be here before we know it!

americana

maternity blue maxi dress, white red kimono 5

This outfit feels a little ra-ra- go 'Merica with all the red, white and blue going on, but I can't say I'm mad about it. :) I had a different kimono planned for this outfit, but after searching high and low to no avail - days later I found it buried under a blanket at the end of my bed - I instead discovered this white/red/pink one buried in the bottom of one of the plastic tubs I still haven't unpacked from the move. (Confession: most of my clothes are still aren't unpacked. Opps.)

My big excitement for the day is the anticipated arrival the teal velvet storage sleeper sofa I ordered over a month ago to go in my office/craft room/guestroom...okay mostly craft room. I've been pinning yarn storage options like crazy. :) But seriously, how pretty is this sofa? I got an incredible deal on it, on sale with an additional 20% + free shipping. I ordered a swatch beforehand it it's more teal in real-life - the online picture looks very blue. I'll post photos to Instagram once it arrives! *insert happy dance*

monday musings: week 23

monday musings_header

Welcome to Monday Musings! Each Monday I share a different "get to know you" style Q&A. I invite you to join in the comments below so I can get to know you as well.

Q: What would you like to be when you "grow up."

gift shop inspiration: one  |  two  |  three  |  four

A: While I love my job doing marketing/graphic design for a university, one day I want to own my own gift shop. Maybe as a second career after the kiddos are grown, though you never know where life will take you. :)

My first taste of working at a gift shop was in high school when I first worked as a gift wrapper during the holiday season then later on the sales floor at a high-end gift shop at the mall. But I didn't really fall in love with the idea until college when I worked at a place at the top of a mountain kinda in the middle of nowhere in Tennessee. The owner was fabulous - she let me create my own displays, run the place by myself, help with buying decisions and even go to market.

Her location was perfect - she was the only game in town - unless you drove down the mountain - but better yet she had great products - gorgeous jewelry, funky purses, candles and knickknacks - she even printed custom invitations (before the popularity of etsy and pinterest). Her stuff was cute, not stuffy, affordable and people just genuinely seemed to love shopping there and I equally loved working there.

So, for 10+ years now, that idea has percolated and grown in my mind as what I want to do someday...maybe years from now, but maybe I'll get a wild hair and do it sooner rather than later, it sure would be fun!

  • what I'm watching: I started watching the Santa Clarita Diet the other night while my husband was giving the kiddo her bath...but didn't get too far into it (not exactly toddler appropriate) and am deciding if it's worth continuing. Has anyone watched it? Did you like it?
  • what I'm crushing on: All the cute, gold strappy sandals. I'd take a pair of these chic scallop ankle straps, these cognac/gold multi strap and these cross strap sandals.
  • what I'm looking forward to: Getting to hear baby boy's heartbeat at this Wednesday's OBGYN appointment!

another day, another kimono

purple maternity dress and cream floral kimono 1

Kimonos have become come my maternity outfit best friend. While I haven't been posting all my outfits featuring kimonos, since I don't want to wear you out with all my outfit sameness, it's seriously been a daily occurrence. Kimono with knee-length dresses ✓. Kimono with long dresses ✓. Kimono with jeans  ✓ and ✓. Not something I wore a lot of before pregnancy, I can't help loving how cool and lightweight kimonos are - plus bonus points for how they balance the ever growing belly and add some interest to an otherwise boring outfit. So here am I, in what is likely to be the first of many jersey dress, sandals and kimono outfits - basically my summer maternity outfit uniform on repeat. :)

Today makes exactly 22 weeks pregnant! Baby boy is approximately 11 inches, almost 1 pound and about the size of a spaghetti squash. I'm still feeling well, though I've resorted to a third pillow in the bed - much to my husband's dismay. One for the head, one to clutch and one between the knees - my husband calls them the "third wheel" because they have a tendency to take over. :) Aubrey's finally accepting her big sister fate and after many weeks of denial is starting to get excited about having a baby brother. She likes to point to my belly and tell me that "brother lives in there." So cute.

currently june

currently I am...

planning: baby boy's nursery. At the moment I'm leaning toward navy and white  - which I think will go well with our gray walls and big sister's hand-me-down white furniture. :) I especially love the dotted rug in my inspiration pic...so cute! I found a similar version at PBTeen...tempting...

wishing: for more rain. It's been so dry in north Florida, though Monday night and this morning we had some really good downpours. I'm loving how the rain sounds on our new metal roof - it's so soothing and relaxing.

learning: how to make paper lantern jellyfish for the kiddo's mermaid birthday party. They're actually super easy to make, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with them now that they party is over...they're almost too cute to throw away...

browsing: for something good to read. I just finished the "Jane Austen Project" and am now reading "The Heist" - but I like to have my next book lined up before I finish the last, and am not sure what to read next. Suggestions?

going: to Publix to pickup the makings for baked ziti. My sister and her crew are on town and coming over tonight for dinner and to see our new house. Though, I'm most excited to finally get to meet my new nephew - can't wait to get a hold of that squishiness!
