Personal:
  • What I'm reading: I've been so busy lately, I haven't had a moment to pick up a book. I've been mainly reading blogs, the news and obsessively stalking the weather (if that even counts as reading).
  • What I'm watching: I made the most of the three-day weekend and turned it into a FOUR-day weekend by taking Friday off. The husband and I went to see the next X-Men: Apocalypse and we have also been watching at bit of Deadpool here and there after kiddo goes to bed.
  • What I'm crushing on: Can I tell you how much I want these adorable rain boots from Joules? Pretty black gloss, fun mustard yellow bow and a bit wider calf width. These are definitely on my want list! Hubby if you're reading this, major hint, hint, hint...
  • What I'm celebrating: My husband took his A+ certification tests Friday and passed with flying colors! So excited and proud of him!
  • What I'm looking forward to: Our trip to Michigan for my grandparent's 65th wedding anniversary is this weekend and I'm so excited about the big family reunion. Plus Michigan is having amazing weather right now (hence the weather stalking) and while it's not terrible in Florida yet, it is warm. Looking forward to some cooler temps!

Wear to Where: Curious George Birthday Party

The kiddo's second birthday party was last weekend and was centered around her current obsession - Curious George - with lots of yellow and pink (instead of red). This is what I wore for the party - a combination of cute, comfy and casual. And pink, of course!

Brace yourself for a long post. The first part features outfit photos for the Wear to Where style challenge and the second part is all about the party details. It's a bit of a long read, but worth it I hope!

Today's the final day of Wear to Where - a fantastic week-long blogging tour that puts together sewers and fashionista for different style challenges. Today's feature is a summer party and I thought Little Bit's party was a perfect fit!

For the party I wanted to wear something that would be super comfortable, easy to move around in (a must when chasing after a toddler) and coordinated with the party theme. I settled on a pretty linen top, blush pink jeans and sandals. Little Bit wore a cute yellow polka dot dress with white leggings and daddy wore a Curious George tee. We were a perfectly coordinated little family. :)

And now, in my opinion, the best part of the post. Party photos!

I made this fun wreath to greet our guests as them came in the door. I already had everything except the felt on hand, so it was practically free! I used fishing wire to attach George and loosely tied the banner so both could be removed, turning it into spring wreath after the party was over.

I found a great tutorial on Facebook on how to make Curious George cookie cutouts without a cookie cutter. You can read more about my cookie making-adventures here.

I found this adorable little Curious George cake topper on Amazon as well as the pink and yellow balloons pick. (The original was in pastel colors and came in a pack of six - which I didn't realize - so I just took off the blue and green balloons and added in the pink and yellow from the other picks). The banner is just two paper straws and a mini banner I printed on card stock and hot glued to a bit of twine. The cake is from Publix - it's strawberry with buttercream frosting and was seriously delicious.

Little Bit loved the Curious George topper so much, she made me take it off and held on to him for most of the party.

The yellow stand on the right is another DIY made from a wood candlestick and wood round I found at Michaels and a bunch of coats of Martha Stewart satin acrylic paint in couscous. The "2" cardboard number is from Hobby Lobby and wrapped with yarn I had my stash. No method to my yarn wrapping madness, I just wound the crap out of it until no more cardboard showed. The cute little milk bottles where 50% of at Michaels and the straws where from the $1 spot at Target (which I also used as picks for the banner on the cake).

Since not everyone at the party are as big of Curious George fans as we are, I made some little signs to pair the food with characters from the TV show with little frames from the dollar bin at Michael's. I had grand visions of making banana pudding in dessert shot glasses, but couldn't find any I liked at a price I was willing to spend, so I ended up using our drinking glasses. The little wooden spoons where another Target find. Oh, and the pink cake stand on the left is another DIY, made the same way as the yellow cake stand and the large, white ceramic cake stand was $5 from the Target dollar spot.

The pink and white lanterns were from last year's 1st birthday party, the yellow honeycomb poof I found at Target and the yellow floral poof and pink and yellow polka dot balloons were Amazon finds.

It was a great party and the kiddo had a really fun time. She especially loved all the Georges and being the center of attention. I'm really pleased with how it all turned out!

Stripes, cardigans and polka dots, oh my! This month was all about patterns and quite possibly a ridiculous amount of cardigans, but I'm really happy with my purchases. So without further ado, here's what I picked up this month:

1. Eloges maxi dress via Groopdealz (see how I wore it here)
I've wanted a maxi dress with sleeves for a while, so I was so happy to find this one on Groopdealz! It's a really comfortable and the floral pattern is even prettier in real-life. It's true to size; mine's an XL.

2. Loft rounded-toe pumps
I'm a sucker for blush, and love that these shoes are a neutral without being a standard tan/beige/nude. I've worn them several times (but haven't managed to photograph them). The round-toe makes them pretty comfortable for a heel. Mine are an 8.5.

3. Loft skinny ankle pants (see how I wore them here)
During my ongoing quest for work pants, I decided to give these crops a try after they went on major sale. They're a 14 and run true to size for Loft. I love the deep rose color, the fit is nice and the fabric is comfortable. Hooray for decent work pants!

4. AEO buckle sandals
I'll admit, initially picked these up because they matched the blush jeans I wore for the kiddo's second birthday party so well, but they really are the perfect summer sandal! The rose gold is so pretty and they well work well both casually and a bit more dressed up. I got these in a 9.

5. J. Crew Factory corded popover
I became obsessed with this shirt after seeing the J. Crew version on Fran last year. When the factory came out with a very, very similar version I had to have it. I've worn it quite a few times but sadly haven't managed to get photos. I sized down to a large for a more fitted look.

6. and 7. J. Crew fine striped cardigan (see how I wore the ash here and the navy here)
I liked the ash striped version of this cardigan so much, I ended up getting the navy as well! They're a little shorter in the torso, which makes them perfect to pair with skirts and dresses. Both are an XL.

8. J. Crew Factory dotted pencil skirt (see a sneak peak of it here)
I tired, and fell in love, with this skirt back in February, but it wasn't available in my size. It's now online in the clearance section, so got an amazing deal on it! It's a 16 and fits true to size.

9. J. Crew mixed tape cardigan (see how I wore it here)
This cardigan is so insanely comfy. It feels like your softest T-shirt and works for both work and the weekend. It's an XL, fitted, but still true to size. I pretty much want it in all the colors now.

What I got as a gift:
For Mother's Day my sweet husband got me this bag from my Amazon wishlist. I think the crossbody strap will make it the perfect carry-on for our upcoming Michigan trip! I also like that it's big without being overwhelming. While no longer available on Amazon, I found the exact bag at JCPenney.

Pin to Present: Curious George Cutout Cookies

Little Bit's Curious George-themed 2nd birthday party was last weekend and I went all out decorating in an explosion of pink, yellow and Georges. I knew wanted to make cutout cookies for the party, but all the cookie cutters I looked at online didn't really look like him, were expensive or wouldn't arrive in time. Thankfully I found this awesome tutorial on how to decorate Curious George cookies with a paper template from from Naomi at Tea Party Cakes!

While obviously not a professional cookie decorator, I'm still really pleased with how these cookies turned out! I think they look at least a little bit like Curious George and when Little Bit saw them, she immediately started pointing at saying "George!"

To make the cookie dough, I used this butter cookie cutouts recipe from Betty Crocker. I love it because it's not too sweet and is reminiscent of my grandma's Christmas cookies. For the frosting I picked up a Wilton royal icing kit so I didn't have to mess with buying meringue powder. I also bought a tube of decorating icing in black and chocolate so I wouldn't have to buy as much food coloring. Though I did end up getting Wilton icing colors in golden yellow for the bananas, pink for the balloons and ivory for George's face. (If you're wondering, the banana cookie cutter and balloon cookie cutter are from Amazon.)

Lessons I learned along the way: it's easy to over cook the outer edges of the hand-cut cookies and if you make the royal icing too thin, the black outlines will bleed. But that was operator error. I think Naomi's instructions were super easy to follow and now that I know the process, it would be so easy to make a paper cookie cutter templates for just about anything my heart desires.

If you enjoyed this post, all the party details, as well as my outfit for the blogging tour Wear to Where, will be published this Saturday!

White Denim Take 2

After braving my white jeans last week for Brianna's Third Thursday Threads, I decided to give them another spin - this time with my chambray shirt and strappy cognac sandals. My outfit was inspired by this pin - and I have to admit a straw fedora really would have made the outfit. But though it's relaxed summer dress code at work, I'd probably get some strange looks if I attempted to rock a hat. :)

Speaking of hats, several years ago I worked at a local newspaper, and there was a reporter who wore the most fantastical hats to work, like it was the Kentucky Derby every day. Or Easter Sunday. At the time we all thought she was nuts - who wears a three-foot blue sunhat with flowers on a random Tuesday? With a sundress. Or a jaunty scarlet red pillbox with a sheath dress and heels like it's 1959? But now, she probably look pretty normal. I mean, just look at Kendi, she looks fabulous with her belted flare dress and straw hat. Not sure what the point of my random story was, other than maybe somehow it ties into wearing things you never would have in the past - which would be the category these jeans would fall into. Though, they're definitely growing on me. I don't think I see any crazy hats in the near future though...

Jeans: American Eagle (current version, exact - I think - on sale!)
Sandals: Loft (similar)
Necklace: Kendra Scott (exact)
Watch: Fossil (exact)
Bracelets: J. Crew Factory (exact pave link) Bourbon and Boweties (exact pearl wire)
Earrings: Reeds (exact, inexpensive alternative)

What's your opinion on the half-tuck, or the shame tuck, or whatever you call it? When my husband/photographer was taking these photos he very much wanted me to know that my shirt was - in this words - "jacked up." IDK, tucked-in all the way just doesn't work for me post baby and untucked looked too long and sloppy - hence the half-tuck. Oh, well, I'm going to go with it works.
