Winter Work Trip Packing List

Each February my office goes to a southern-based, professional development conference and this year it's in Nashville! I'm so excited to be going to my home state, even if it's on the opposite side.

In the past, packing meant throwing a bunch of things I liked in a bag and hoping it worked out. More often than not, I was disappointed with my outfits and would always over pack. I've since learned the beauty of visual packing lists - they're a great way to organize, ensure great outfits and avoid the overstuffed bag.

blush cardigan (similar, cocoon style)  |  gray sweater (exact)  |  dotted sweater (cardigan option)  |  flannel blazer (exact, similar)  |  pencil skirt (similar)  |  pencil pants (exact)  |  skinny jeans (similar)  |  dot blouse (similar)  |  lace tee (similar)  |  blush top (exact)  |  coat (exact)  |  scarf (exact)  |  earrings  (exact)  |  tote (similar)  |  watch (exact)  |  pearl necklace (exact)  |  tassel necklace (exact)  |  nude flats (exact)  |  espadrilles (similar)  |  black heels (similar)

We're leaving on Valentine's Day, so I went with a soft, romantic color palette with pops of blush. It's so pretty paired with gray and black!

The conference is four days, but there are a variety of activities and outings to dress for. I've got 10 items (not including accessories and coat) to make eight outfits, but you could easily remix them into more looks...which is nice if something doesn't quite work in real-life.
I'm really happy with the mix of professional and casual options. Fingers crossed that I can get everything to fit in my weekender!

  1. I'm kind of obsessed with visual packing lists now too - even fancier that you lay out the outfits like that! I usually lay them out on my bed while I'm packing (or even better, put them on my body) just to double check, but the visual list really does improve packing outcomes. Plus it's more fun!

LOVE your color palette, and such a great mix of business/casual. I'm always trying to do that when I pack for work trips too.

    1. I like how that wear the outfits and take photos! Then you truly know that it's all going to work together. I originally wanted to do the same thing, but I ran out of time to take photos, so I did it this way instead. Also, there's no great place in our house for photo taking (the joys of a tiny house). :)

  2. This is by far the most gorgeous packing list I've ever seen! I love your use of color swatches, which you then ACTUALLY FOLLOW UP with gorgeous outfits!

    1. Thanks Kara! I do a lot of graphic design in real life, so I'm kind of obsessed with Pantone swatches. During one of my Pinterest searches, I saw where someone had incorporated swatches into their outfit mix and was all like...ooo...I have to do that next time...

I'll confess I worked the entire color pallet around the blush scarf, it's so soft and not too bulky, love!

    1. Thanks so much! I've been really into blush lately, I like how you can mix it was both dark and light colors, it almost acts like a neutral!

  4. What a gorgeous packing list! I've been trying to coordinate items better when packing to avoid over packing, but this would help a ton!

    1. I am the worst about over packing. Usually I have to sit on the bag to get it to zip, and then I don't wear half of what I packed! Last fall, we went to Gatlinburg and I tried this type of packing list and it was so helpful. I didn't have to think about what to wear and I could actually zip my bag. :)

  5. What a beautiful color palette! Everything works SO well together. I've got a work event coming up in March in California, so I'll have to A- bust out my professional clothes which haven't been worn before baby and B- find the warm weather items I own (even though I'll be in AC in a hotel the whole time, I still have to dress light right?!) Definitely using this as inspiration! Do you own the lace sweater top from Target? Just curious if it fits true to size. Darling!

    1. I got the Target sweater in the mail yesterday, and it was just right in the arms/chest and lose/flowy in the waist (more so than it looks on the model). A size smaller would be a better fit in the waist, but I worry the arms would be too tight (but I have bigger upper arms, so that's a common problem for me). It's a thinner knit with a slight open weave so you have to wear a cami. Overall, it's cute, and super soft and I like the high-low hem, but I think I need to try it on again with skinny jeans or leggings and see how I feel about it. (I tried it on quickly last night with baggy sweatpants, NOT a great look.)

    2. You're the best- this is great...thanks! So appreciate your thoughts on this! Bummed it doesn't look good with sweatpants though...HA!

I am so digging your style- I feel like we are very similar in terms of the pieces we gravitate towards. Love love love it!

    1. I want to! I saw after I posed this that blush is the theme for Brianna's Third Thursday Threads - http://www.workclothesisuppose.com/blog/2016/2/8/third-thursday-threads-february-theme-announcement

How perfect did that turn out?! I'm bringing my camera and tripod, the trick is finding time to take photos!

  7. Ooh this packing list is BEAUTIFUL! I love the color palette you chose, and how you laid out each outfit you would make. I used to be such an over-packer, but since having a kid I try to keep my stuff to a minimum and mix and match as much as possible (so I can overpack for my little one of course...).

  9. Girl, you're like my style spirit animal. I struggle to imagine my wardrobe pieces in the suggestions of other folks (I know, I know, a blazer is a blazer is a blazer...except when it isn't!) and I love your style. Thanks for sharing!
